Reglan /Metoclopramide has been in the news a lot lately due to reports that Reglan usage for more than 3 months increases the risk of a neurological condition called Tardive Dyskinesia which involves involuntary facial movements or twitches, tongue and lip protrusions, facial expressions and frowns. Metoclopramide can be found in Reglan tablets, generic Reglan pills, generic metoclopramide, oral disintegrating pills, metoclopramide oral solution and Reglan injections.
In Feb, 2009 the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is putting a Reglan black box warning (the strongest FDA warning) on all drugs containing the pharmaceutical ingredient metoclopramide (Reglan), which is used in the treatment of disorders like heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease. The black box label warns consumers about the risk of developing tardive dyskinesia, which causes involuntary repetitive movements (twitches) with long-term, high-dose use of metoclopramide. Symptoms of tardive dyskinesia can persist long after the patient stops using the drug. See:Reglan Tardive Dyskinesia Warning - June 2009.
The FDA has not issued a Reglan recall nor is any recall of Reglan planned or scheduled at this time. To keep up with the latest news, alerts and any news of a future Reglan recall or Metoclopramide recall, then check with FDA.gov
Any patient taking Reglan or other forms of metoclopramide should have been warned of the risk of tardive dyskinesia by their doctor prior to being prescribed the drug. The risk increases the longer a patient takes metoclopramide, and with higher doses. FDA studies show that around 20 percent of patients who developed drug-induced movement disorders after taking Metoclopramide had taken the drug for more than three months.(See: Reglan Side Effects)

Reglan Side Effects
If the Reglan user starts to develop repetitive, involuntary, purposeless facial movements, grimacing, sticking your tongue out, lip smacking, puckering, pursing of the lips, rapid movement of arms, legs, fingers or toes, rapid eye blinking and twitches then the the patient should seek medical attention to get this investigated and to see if the Reglan usage could in fact be the cause. ** Many of our clients have told us that their prescribing doctor did not attempt to relate their facial movements, twitches, shakes or other parkinson's like symptoms to Reglan. Therefore it may be best to go to a neurologist and get a second opinion as to the diagnosis and cause of the tardive dyskinesia or other medical problems.
